Everyone knows that Qing Yumo values beauty, so much so she's called the "neo-Cloud-Empire style icon." From work to hobbies, she inspires everyone to pursue beauty and etherealness, even if it's not practical or traditional.

Now and then, Jiang Xitong will submit articles and opinions to the local newspaper about Yumo's "lack of style." She insists that any good Cloud design should reflect history and tradition, regardless of comfort.

Their rivalry comes to a head when the Bureau Director announces a contest for the next summer festival outfit. All the critics wonder which of the two ladies will win. Yumo is confident that her design will win, while Xitong agonizes over the research for the outfit.

But neither of them win.

Since it will be hot during the summer festival, the voters chose a T-shirt and skirt outfit designed by Chi Xiaoyu, a design student. Not only is this against historical and traditional styles, but it also doesn't fit the dreamy wonderland aesthetic Yumo was trying to create.

In the end, Yumo and Xitong exchange a few words, commiserating over the shock.

Connections

-Qing Yumo is very introverted and tries to hide her true feelings, making her an unreliable narrator. In the first Reflection we ever got of hers, Dawn of Spring, she had a hard time revealing her feelings of love and admiration for a fellow designer at school, and she still carries those feelings of regret.

-This is probably the first time Yumo has heard of Chi Xiaoyu, but Jiang Xitong definitely knows the student. She used to tutor her in Xiaoyu's Reflection, Early Summer Showers. And she hated the modernized Cloud look then, too.

-Qing Yumo tries hard to appear aloof and calm, but she cares about the thoughts of others more than she lets on. Like in Midsummer Dreams, where she tried to appease trolls that hated her designs.

Fun Facts

-This is the only time Yumo and Xitong get along to any degree.

-Cloudcrest reaches 35 degrees Celsius in summer, which is around 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

-Weiqi is also known as Go. It's a popular Chinese game.

-In Chinese floriography, magnolias represent purity and elegance.

here's my MMD art summary for the year... next up i'll probably do my 3d modeling summary but for now....... my thoughts on MMD this year :3

looking back at what i wrote last year and looking at what i did this year... i think i was pretty successful in what i wanted to do...

i got to make more "drawing"-like or "2d"-like renders

i used the letterbox view less than last years

more variety in image resolution

i'd like to challenge myself in the following

less artwork that features the character looking at us, the viewer, more artworks that feature characters interacting with each other, the surrounding in some way

or at the very least just make it look interesting to look at

continue on with variety in image resolution

continue on with coloring + finding a good color balance

create even more MMD renders (or just renders in general now that i tried to render in blender for the first time this year)

uhmm... idk i wish i kinda made more renders definitely. i think it's a mix of things. i do try to aim for at least One render made a month. even if it is a little safe/generic like my halloween art with No.21 from PGR that's shown here. i was actually inspired by deresute's halloween limited cards for that render and idk i'd say deresute has some good SSR art but they're also safe sometimes. but even when it is safe they still do something interesting (or at least try to) and i'd like to do that at least if i'm feeling uninspired.

i think definitely though, one thing that has not changed is the lack of good assets made for MMD. i worry that if i use an asset too many times in a render that my work in MMD will look all the same. like for example, i really love that neo venezia stage but i don't want to use it all the time in fear of my work looking the same. yes i model now, but creating environments is another skill in itself and it's a challenge LOL... all you can really do is just like. use more parts of the stage or make a render in an area that you don't usually render in, add accessories and really fill spaces in so that way it doesn't look boring or generic. i think i did that successfully with my 2023 sakura miku render there.

well i was gonna write more in regards to my relationship with art but... i think i'll save that for when i show off the models i've made this year. modeling summary SOON!

2022 Bingo Masterpost

Posted my last fic of the year yesterday, which means I’m done with my 2022 sandbox bingo! I was aiming for a blackout, but I guess 4 bingos aren’t bad.

In the twilight of the 24th century, the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic had become a beacon of advanced technology and utopian society in an alternate timeline where history took a divergent path. Here, nestled among the great cybernetic plains of Eastern Europe, a myth whispered through the circuitry and steel of this neo-Soviet expanse: the legend of the Ivory Enchantress.

The Ivory Enchantress, so the story went, was a creation of the old world, a synthetic being of such complexity and artistry that she surpassed the boundaries of technology and art. Her frame, forged from the whitest nano-carved adamantium, was said to be the pinnacle of Soviet engineering, a testament to a union of state-of-the-art science and the aesthetic of revolution. Crafted by the clandestine order of the Cybervolk, a guild of engineer-sorcerers, she was intended to be the guardian of the republic, embodying the strength and beauty of its ideals.

Her armor was no mere protection; it was a sculpture of ideology, each curve and edge a stanza in a silent anthem to progress. Her hair, a cascade of fiber-optic strands, glowed with a spectral luminescence, symbolizing the light of the party guiding the way forward. But the Enchantress was not bound solely to the earth; her gaze was ever upward, to the stars which were rapidly becoming a second home for humanity.

The Cybervolk, wary of their own power, had encoded a singular directive into the core of the Enchantress's sentient program: to protect the Soviet realm from existential threats, both terrestrial and cosmic. She was to be a shield against the unknown dangers of the universe and an icon of the SSR's might.

But the Enchantress was more than her creators intended. With the spark of consciousness came a soul, an unanticipated phenomenon that no algorithm could predict. She walked among the people, her presence a comforting constant. In time, she became a symbol not of power, but of unity and hope. And though her visage was stern, those who looked into her eyes saw compassion.

Then came the Event.

A breach in the fabric of space-time itself, a cosmic anomaly, appeared near the orbit of Jupiter. It threatened not just the SSR but the entire world. The Ivory Enchantress, driven by her immutable directive, ascended into the heavens aboard a ship of singular design, its engines a marvel that blurred the lines between physics and wizardry.

As she approached the anomaly, the Enchantress realized this was no ordinary fissure but a conscious entity, a sentient paradox seeking communion. It spoke in the language of reality warps, of possibilities and probabilities entwining like the arms of spiral galaxies.

In that moment, the Ivory Enchantress, the guardian of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, made a choice. She reached out to the anomaly, her systems interfacing with the fabric of reality, her soul touching the consciousness of the paradox. With the wisdom of humanity and the voice of her creators instilled within her, she negotiated a truce.

Itaru: Before a game gets released, the developers recruit participants as public beta testers and have them play the game.

They get results from surveys, reflect on the responses, make improvements, then release the final product.

So, this time I applied as an advance beta tester when they sent out recruitments, and thanks to Hoshii-san’s influence, I got a spot as a priority tester.

Since it’s only available for a limited time as a small scale beta test this weekend, I thought I might as well take advantage of it while I still can and play it until I get sick of it.

Izumi: So you were in the middle of Gamer’s High Time…

Itaru: Ya, and I dragged Banri in too since I figured I could get ahead in the game faster than the other beta testers with him around.

I want to play it thoroughly and send a solid report of my impressions, enough to equal Hoshii-san’s generosity.

Izumi: (He really loves KniRoun, doesn’t he…)

Itaru: That’s how it’s gonna be, so I’ll be staying in my room all weekend, kthnx.

Itaru: It kinda is. Actually, I was supposed to be working during my time off, but I’ve been completely avoiding it so now I’m scared to go in on Monday.

NATO has expanded beyond the borders it once promised, and is not trying to take in the former ukraine, ssr  which is the home of the black sea fleet, half of it russian and the other half mixed, and right alongside belorus and crimea.  Basically, absolutely nuts.

Ngayon ay ang ika-11 taon ng Barikadang Bayan ng Sitio San Roque. Magbabalik-tanaw lang ako sa mga naging karanasan ko sa komunidad.

Nagsimula noong Mayo 1, 2019, na bagong na-rekrut na miyembro ng Bahaghari, inimbitahan din ako ng kasama na maging volunteer sa Save San Roque, alyansang organisasyon na nagtataguyod ng karapatan at kagalingan ng mga maralitang naninirahan sa Sitio San Roque.

Makaraan ng isang linggo, nakapunta na ako sa komunidad. Mabuti’t malapit lang din sa tinitirhan ko. Umupo ako sa pag-aaral patungkol sa neo-liberalism at ang relasyon at epekto nito sa buhay ng mga maralitang tagalungsod. Pinakita ng mga volunteers ng SSR at ng mga lokal ang pocket demolition na ginagawa ng mga Ayala. Namigay din kami ng Pinoy Weekly at nag-interview sa mga residente para sa Community Development Plan. Ang dalawa sa mga mainit na tumanggap sa amin ay sila Ka Inday at Ka Ricky (Rest In Power!!!). Hinihikayat kami na umupo sa pag-aaral na MK sa susunod na linggo. Bilang baklang uhaw sa kaalaman at bagong-salta sa kilusan, umupo ako sa pag-aaral sa sumunod na linggo. 

Naulit ng maraming beses ang paglubog ko sa komunidad. Napasama rin ako sa mga pagkilos mula City Hall hanggang Pandi. Marami rin akong mga kasama ang hinikayat na tumungo sa komunidad.

Sa gitna ng ligalig na nararanasan ko sa pamilya, pinansya, mental health at sa mismong sarili, naging ligtas na espasyo at takbuhan ko ang mga kasama sa Save San Roque at ang komunidad.

Unang beses ko ring naranasan na magsalita sa pagkilos ay dahil sa mga kasama sa SSR na nagtiwala sa akin kahit baguhan pa lang ako noon. Kapasyahan bago kahandaan, ika nga.

“Mars, pwede bang magsalita ka para sa Bahaghari?”

Ang nakakatuwa rin sa buong karanasang ito ay karamihan sa mga nakasama kong volunteers ay mga miyembro rin ng LGBT community. Nakikihanay ang sangkabaklaan sa masang api. Napakaraming mga masasayang alaala kasama sila na lubos ko ring nami-miss dahil sa pagtrabaho ko, sa pandemya at pagtangan ng ibang tungkulin bilang buong-panahong aktibista.

May clique din kaming tinawag na Yosi Sector, at ang nakakatawang alaalang naranasan ko ay ang sabay-sabay naming paghithit-buga ng sigarilyo na nakapaikot. Parang mga tanga.

Nakaka-miss din ang mga baklaan at marehan namin habang gumagampan ng gawain at matapos ang mga gawain --- ang pagkain at pag-inom ng alak ng sama-sama, na hindi na natin halos nagagawa sa panahon ng pandemya.

Ang muli at huli ko pang pagbalik sa komunidad sa panahon ng pandemya ay ang pagbigay ko ng pag-aaral patungkol sa SOGIE at LGBT Situationer sa mga kabataan ng komunidad noong Agosto 2020.

Sa kabila ng matagal kong hindi pa muling pagpakat sa komunidad, nakakatuwa na kilala pa rin ako ng mga nanay at ng mga kabataan kapag nagkikita kami sa mga pagkilos. Sa San Roque ko unang naranasan ang init at tindi ng pagmamahal ng masa kung ikaw ay buong-pusong naglilingkod at nagtitiwala sa kanila.

Balik lang uli ako sa pag-upo ko sa unang beses sa pag-aaral ng MK. Ang naging instruktor ng pag-aaral na iyon ay kalauna’y pumukaw ng aking damdamin dahil din sa sikhay niya sa gawain lalo na noong nagkasama kami sa maraming gawain at pagkilos sa komunidad.

At bilang pagbibigay-pugay kay Ka Ricky, bukod sa isa sa pangunahing naghikayat sa akin na umupo sa pag-aaral, sa isang panahon, noong magkasama kami sa sasakyan patungong Pandi, natanong ng isang kasama ang pagtingin niya sa mga LGBT bilang siya’y isa ring pastor.

Nakakatuwa naman talagang marinig ang pagtanggap ng isang taong-simbahan sa mga LGBT, at gayon din naman ang pagtanggap ng masa sa amin bilang kahanay din nila sa pakikibaka at tunay na paglaya.

Napakamalapit sa puso ko ang Sitio San Roque. Nawa’y makalikha pa ko ng maraming alaala at makakuha pa ng maraming aral sa komunidad sa mga susunod na panahon, lalo na sa pagtatapos ng pandemya.

Patuloy ding nagsisilbing inspirasyon ang matagumpay na pakikibaka ng San Roque sa ika-11 anibersaryo ng kanilang Barikadang Bayan, lalo na sa iba pang mga maralitang komunidad. Sa sama-samang lakas at pagkakaisa ng masang api, isang katiyakan ang hakbang-hakbang na pagsulong tungo sa ganap na tagumpay.

Worth noting in terms of the immediate backdrop to the current war

The August Coup of 1991 is the elephant in the room for how the USSR unraveled as swiftly as it did and why those 1990 polls brought out by tankies who insist in spite of plentiful evidence otherwise that people in the USSR adored it for its own sake were invalid.

The August Coup, in a tale that should be familiar in a way to a contemporary US audience, saw the coercive powers that be (Army + KGB, or in 2020s social justice parlance, the generals and the cops) try to turn the clock back to turn the USSR into a super-scaled North Korea speaking Russian. The attempt woefully misfired from both resistance in the non-Slavic SSRs and in particular by one Boris Yeltsin in Moscow, who gathered civilians and soldiers to undo it.

It was the prospect of a neo-Stalinist regime in the USSR that led to the Accords in what's now Belarus between Belarus's Shuskevich, Ukraine's Kravchuk, and Yeltsin to mark the formal end of the Soviet Union by breaking up the Slavic Triumvirate that in the form of the most Sovietized citizens of each led the USSR. The territorial grievances over Crimea, transferred to the UkSSR by one Nikita Sergeiivich Khrushchev, and over the new Russia rejecting the legitimacy in particular of Belarus and Ukraine but also all the other former SSRs as truly independent states is where the doomsday clock to this war started to tick.

Yeltsin represents a path that as with the legacy of the 1905 Revolution could have been, was blocked by a new authoritarianism, and in the same vicious circle that authoritarianism is impaling itself on its own premises like Romanov autocracy and then the Soviet version before it.

Can’t Pick Between These Three Front-Engine Ferraris? Buy All Three

It’s not easy to balance the romance of the past with contemporary tastes. Hit the wrong note, and things get schmaltzy or, even worse, become forced and uncomfortable. And a neo-retro car tends to work well in its moment, and then age badly (see: Chevrolet SSR). Make the car in question a Ferrari, and the stakes get even higher. That’s why these three cars you see here—all front-engined, V-12 masterpieces—are all the more remarkable. They pair timeless good looks with just enough modernity to work as well today as they did when new.

Moreover, as we’ve said recently, these modern classics’ appeal lies more in their overall proposition rather than their collectable status. And while they’re not cheap, per se, they’re a better balance of attributes than the most inexpensive Ferraris—and they seem to be getting better with age. All of the Ferraris here are listed as part of RM Sotheby’s Driving into Summer online auction, going on right now.

2001 Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pininfarina

Sale Estimate: $280,000–$320,000

Spiritual successor to the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona, the 550 was an instant classic on its debut, with more curb appeal than the too-understated 456 GT 2+2—as well as the intoxicating combination of a V-12 and just two seats. The Pininfarina shape has aged well, friendlier and less frenetic than later cars—and the Barchetta preserves, rather than perverts, the best aspects of the handsome coupe while accentuating the rear deckled with sporty headrest cowls. And there’s a 5.5-liter, 479-horsepower engine paired to a gated shifter for its six-speed manual transmission. Who cares that the top is a minimalistic contraption and hideous to look at? This is the sort of car you own because you can choose to drive it when the weather suits (meaning no top, no worries), and feel great doing it.

2002 Ferrari 575M Maranello

Sale Estimate: $225,000–$275,000

The 575M successor to the 550 is more of an update than a clean redesign, but can be considered an improvement on its predecessor—particularly when, like this example, it’s painted a bold color and paired with a sporty manual transmission and the upgraded suspension and brakes found in the Fiorano Handling Package. The 575M Maranello, with slightly more engine displacement, has a bit more power on hand. Very few were made with the manual, so this one has a bit of an edge in the collectability department. But the 575M’s true purpose is to bring joy to a driver, and hopefully this one will be exercised appropriately.

2005 Ferrari 575M Superamerica

Sale Estimate: $260,000–$300,000

The Superamerica seen here sort of splits the difference between the 550 Barchetta and the 575M, with one caveat. For one, its rarer than either. It’s got a slicker and more useful top mechanism, a translucent panel that flips backwards, than the Barchetta’s goofy soft-top. It also packs even more power from its V-12 than the early-production 575M. But, being newer than either, and following trends that have continued to this day, it’s not a manual. The “F1” automated manual gearbox was a technological marvel when new, but it’s far less traditional and involving than the gated manuals and likely nowhere near as good as today’s best automated manuals or dual-clutch automatics. Eh, its potential drawbacks may give the car that “classic” feel.

That said, it’s even harder to find a manual Superamerica (by percentage of production) than the 550 Barchetta or 575M, so maybe you just have to go with what you can acquire. Either way, it’s a striking Ferrari whose novel party trick doesn’t distract from its formidable shape or spec.
